Learning Objectives: Course learning objectives Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: · Understand and implement the principles of the scientific method to create new knowledge. This course will place special emphasis on using scientific observation to better understand ecological patterns. o Primary assessment: Field-based inquiry research project · Assess the (plant) biodiversity of their local environment using scientific taxonomy and cutting-edge community science tools such as iNaturalist o Primary assessment: Lab assignment mapping plant biodiversity · Communicate with both scientists and non-scientists about the importance of biodiversity from a socio-ecological perspective o Primary assessment: make <90 second Flipgrid video; active participation in journal club class discussion · Understand the ecological principles underpinning connections between biodiversity and ecosystem functioning o Primary assessment: Mid-course exam · Read, interpret, and synthesize primary literature in ecology o Primary assessment: short writing assignments, active participation in journal club class discussion · Develop a broader view of professional paths that incorporate science skills o Primary assessment: Conduct interview with an early-career scientist
