Levels: Undergraduate Main Campus Campus Lecture Schedule Type Traditional Instructional Method Learning Objectives: Course Description This is a survey course on poetry and creative writing by Indigenous authors from the Pacific islands. Focusing on Indigenous Pacific voices, we will look at places, relationships, and stories articulated from the region of Oceania and explore personal connections to them. In this course we will center ourselves within the geographic, historical, and cultural context of the Pacific region. We will also analyze the voice, craft, and performance of the literature of established and emerging Pacific writers. This course emphasizes creative engagement that draws connections between the Pacific, the personal, and the global. In this course, the development of your writing voice may emerge from the relationships you can draw to these readings and communities. You will be asked to express connections between your personal geographies, histories, and cultures. You will share these connections through close readings and analyses, weekly writing experiments, and ultimately a portfolio of your own work. Two close reading assignments will allow you to closely investigate literary form and craft. You will select one author from our reading list, conduct a presentation on their context and craft, and respond creatively in your writing portfolio. Using the Critical Response Process, you will learn to provide helpful feedback to your peers which will guide them in their revision process. This course will help you skillfully navigate the work of the writer through close reading, writing experiments, revision, and performance. This course culminates in a final performance of one of your pieces.
